Nouveaux Ballets -english-

Nouveaux Ballets

Created in 2016, based in Lille (North of France) and named after a DADA-style joke, the company presents the shows of artist Amélie Poirier. It engages in multidisciplinary research, producing shows for teenagers and adults alongside shows for young audiences and, more recently, for public spaces. Above all, it is the dramaturgical meaning that shapes the contours of the various shows. The relationship between the body and objects is at the heart of the company's creative approach.

As a multidisciplinary artist, Amélie Poirier trained in dance (classical, contemporary, butoh) and theater at a conservatory before discovering puppetry. After studying at the National School for Puppetry Arts in Charleville-Mézières (2008-2009), she continued her training in Quebec. She holds a DESS (postgraduate diploma) in contemporary puppet theater from UQAM in Montreal. Alongside her artistic practice, she is working on theorizing issues related to puppet theater training in the West as part of a Master 2 in contemporary arts aesthetics at the University of Lille 3.

In 2011, she performed and create the solo show La Jeune fille et la morve, directed by Mathieu Jedrazak. This unique performance was staged at venues in France, Belgium, and Quebec. The solo show quickly made her a household name in the Hauts-de-France region. Since 2012, she has received several grants for emerging artists and research from the french ministry of Culture in conjunction with certified organizations in the region. In addition, she was selected by the french ministry of Culture to participate in a multidisciplinary research laboratory with choreographer Christian Rizzo in 2012, furthering her interest in research.

In June 2012, she was a finalist in the Danse élargie competition at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.

She is also one of the choreographers selected for the third edition of the Prototype program at the Royaumont Abbaye (2015-2016). Under the direction of choreographer Hervé Robbe, she is invited to question the notion of quotation as a paradigm in choreographic creation.

Currently, she is focusing part of her research on the relationship between the body, movement, and materials, seeking to transpose protocols from contemporary dance and somatic practices into the relationship with objects. In this vein, since 2020, she has been training in BMC (Body Mind Centering) in somatic education through movement. Another aspect of her artistic research lies in documentary theater in dialogue with objects and materials.

In 2018, she was awarded the SACD-Beaumarchais Foundation's choreography grant for her piece for young audiences, DADAAA.

In collaboration with visual artists, she creates different forms of echoes to the shows she designs: documentary films, video dance installations (in collaboration with Justine Pluvinage and Léonore Mercier), and the publication of a photo book initiated by photographer Lucie Pastureau recounting the collaborative process behind the show 20ème rue ouest.

Since 2016, her work has been promoted in France by the Nouveaux Ballets du Nord-Pas de Calais, named in the spirit of DADA and with a desire for indiscipline. In Quebec, her work is promoted by Synthèse Additivebased in Montreal. She also accompanies various companies in their creations for young audiences.

Amélie Poirier has been an associate artist at the Théâtre des Ilets/Dramatic National Center of de Montluçon-Auvergne, directed by Carole Thibaut, since 2016 and at the Théâtre le Grand Bleu: a theater dedicated to art, children, and youth in Lille from 2021 to 2024.

Her work is regularly presented in Europe (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, etc.) and North America (Quebec and Ontario).
